Sake Masu - Traditional Wooden Sake Cup
A traditional sake 'masu' cup. Hand crafted from Japanese cypress wood, this cup has a woody fragrance which is regarded as a compliment while drinking sake. Cypress is a soft wood and as such, the cup should be handled delicately.
These cups were traditionally used to measure rice. In feudal Japan, rice was used as currency. It measured out a persons salary of rice.
They require a small amount of special care. Before using the cup, make sure to soak it in cold water for about 10 - 15 minutes. Remove and towel dry. Leave the cup to dry out. This swells the joins in the wood and makes it leak proof. When you have enjoyed your favourite sake from this cup. Wash with water only. Please do not use any soaps of any kind as it can contaminate the wood which will lose its fragrance. Store your masu in a cold, dry place.
